CRI study criticizes single-stream collection
One of the nation's foremost proponents for bottle bills, the Container Recycling Institute (CRI), has come out with a study critical of single-stream recyclable collection systems, going so far as to recommend against their further implementation.
The study, Understanding Economic and Environmental Impacts of Single-Stream Collection Systems, finds that single-stream collection results in greater system costs and lower end-quality of the materials collected. The conclusion of the study, prepared for CRI by CM Consulting, is that dual-stream programs see greater cost benefits due to a lesser degree of contamination and increased value of feedstock.
A thorough examination of the study by Clarissa Morawski, principal of CM Consulting and author of the report, will appear in the January 2010 issue of Resource Recycling magazine. Click here to subscribe.
