Consumers buy heavier plastic bags after Hong Kong tax

August 8, 2011 A study from the Hong Kong plastics industry says that contrary to expectations, the city´s bag tax has increased the amount of plastic used in bags by more than 25 percent, prompting industry officials to question the 2-year-old law´s environmental benefits. The study found that use of the plastic bags targeted by the law -- the T-shirt and die-cut bags commonly used at supermarkets and retailers -- did drop substantially, as the law envisioned. EU PET recycling rate at 48 percent

Vietnam plant to recycle food-grade PET

July 12, 2011 Vietnam´s Thanh Tai Gas Co. is setting up a PET recycling plant with the capability to produce FDA-approved food grade material, using equipment from American supplier Bepex International LLC. Thanh Tai plans to have the first line operating by January, with a second parallel production line set up later, Bepex said in a July 11 statement. The system will have capacity to recycle up to 1.5 billion PET bottles a year. Plastics News

Plastics recycling on the rise throughout Australia
