Drink pouch group lightens landfill load
By Elizabeth Shaw

GENESEE COUNTY - Imagine 4.6 billion fruit drink pouches piled up in local landfills.

According to the Container Recycling Institute, that's how many end up there every year, due to the non-recyclable material used to make them.

Now, TerraCycle Partners is joining forces with Capri Sun and Honest Tea to rescue and reuse 1 million drink pouches in the next 12 months - converting them into pencil cases, handbags and school supplies to be sold at Target stores in 2008.

The Drink Pouch Brigade will pay participants 2 cents for every drink pouch collected, regardless of brand. To date, more than 800 schools and other community groups have signed up for the free program, including Garfield Community Elementary in the Flint Community School District.
