Take small steps toward going green

In minimizing environmental waste, consider changing minor things.

* Try using durable coffee mugs and cloth napkins and towels, use empty jars as containers for leftover food and buy refillable pens and pencils. Each of these small steps can help make a difference for landfills.

* Refill water bottles: According to the Container Recycling Institute, 86 percent of plastic water bottles used in the United States become garbage or litter. In landfills, buried plastic water bottles can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade.

* Reuse office supplies: Reuse items like paper clips, folders, binders and other organizational supplies. Instead of tossing out used printer paper, keep it in a tray to use as scratch paper.

* Reuse items you already have: You don't have to buy new pieces to turn your tired domicile into a hip space. Instead, turn a fresh eye to what you already have and think about how it might be camouflaged or re-imagined.
