Here at CRI, we’ve recently uncovered some startling facts. In the last few months, CRI’s exclusive research gives us a sense that we have a duty to warn our members in the US recycling community about new financial challenges for 2019.

This webinar will address the following questions:

  • Why has there been such a large drop in prices for aluminum cans (UBCs) recently?
  • We’ve seen dramatically lower material revenues for recyclables, but how long will the downturn last? Is this a temporary change, or the new normal?
  • Which materials have strong domestic markets, which have historically relied on exports, and how is that changing in 2019?
  • There have been big announcements by big brands: they say they want to use more recycled content, but where will that material come from? Will this help cities and states with long-sought-after market development?
  • Now that more than 1,000 redemption centers have closed in California in the last four years, what is the forecast for California redemption centers in 2019, and what will that mean for the beverage container recycling rate nationally?
  • Many communities around the US have made changes to their curbside recycling programs. With changes to the mix of materials collected, changes to market availability and declining prices, what does that mean for the average cost of recycling collection?
  • What might all of this mean for future price increases for ratepayers?

On a related note, we’ll also walk everyone through our new fact sheet on payments to curbside and dropoff programs in California through the beverage container recycling program: demystifying the complex, 5-part system of payments to curbside programs.

Presenters:

Susan V. Collins, President of Container Recycling Institute
Jenny Gitlitz, Consultant, Container Recycling Institute
