California’s cost-effective beverage container recycling program continues to be one of the best programs in the U.S. with an 82% recycling rate. However, the increase in the recycling rate has put a strain on the program’s finances. CalRecycle is currently holding a series of workshops to actively solicit input on ways to streamline the fund’s cash flow.

CRI’s Susan Collins will lead a panel of state and private sector experts in discussing the current state of California’s beverage container deposit program, which factors make it so successful and how to provide comments to CalRecycle. Updates will include the status of borrowing of funds by the State, the repayment schedule, and CalRecycle’s investigation of out-of-state containers brought in to California recycling centers. You’ll also learn about California’s unique process of assessing the cost of doing business for California recyclers, in order to reimburse them on a cost-per-container basis.
