Falling prices for scrap materials prompt closure of recycling centers in California

July 1st, 2016 - Mike Oldfield, an official at California's Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle), said that over 300 of the 2,100 recycling centers in the state have been closed in the last year and a half owing to falling prices for scrap materials. rePLanet, the state's biggest private operator, closed 191 centers in past January alone. The cans and bottles he scores from dumpsters in alleys behind San Francisco's downtown offices all hit the scale when he cashes them in at local redemption centers, and if he's doing it right, Daniel can make $1,000 a week, and about $48,0000 a year, or so he tells the station.
